महर्षि जमदग्नि व उनके वंशज || Maharishi Jamadagni and his descendants

Sage Jamadagni was born the son of Richika, a descendant of the Bhrigu dynasty. Jamadagni, counted among the "Saptarishis," was married to Renuka, daughter of King Prasenjit. Through his austerities and meditation, Jamadagni attained a high status, and everyone respected him. Sage Jamadagni was an ascetic and a brilliant sage. Sage Jamadagni and Renuka had five sons: Rukmavan, Sukhena, Vasu, Vishvavanasa, and Parashurama. According to mythology, when the terror and oppression of the Kshatriya kings of the Haihaya dynasty increased on Earth, everyone became distressed by them. Brahmins and sages became insecure, and these kings began to interfere with religious activities. At this time, Bhrigu Shrestha, pleased with Maharishi Jamdagni's performance of the Putrayeshti Yagna, grants him the boon of begetting a son. His wife Renuka gives him five sons: Rukmavan, Sukhen, Vasu, Vishwanas, and Parashurama. Parashurama destroys all of these Haihayavanshi kings. The village of Jajnapur is located 28 kilometers northeast of Kaithal in Haryana. Maharishi Jamdagni's ashram was located here. Now, only a lake remains. A fair is held here on the tenth day of the bright fortnight of every month. In the tradition of Maharishi Jamdagni, the place where Baba Sadhu Ram performed penance and gave up his body is revered as Baba Sadhu Ram's Samadhi. Even today, the special feature of this lake is that after filling it with water, a hissing sound is heard. Even a fully filled lake dries up within fifteen days. Snakes are believed to be abundant in this area, but no harm has been caused to it to date. In his ashram, there was a Kamadhenu cow that bestowed desired fruits. King Kartavirya Arjuna of the Haihaya dynasty was a very cruel king. Once, he visited the ashram of sage Jamadagni. There, after seeing the special qualities of the Kamadhenu cow, he tried to take it with him, but Jamadagni refused to give the Kamadhenu cow to Kartavirya Arjuna. Thereupon, the king killed sage Jamadagni and took the Kamadhenu cow with him. Parashurama avenges his father's murder by killing Kartavirya and bringing Kamadhenu back to the ashram. After performing his father's last rites, he vows to rid the earth of Kshatriyas, and to do so, he travels the entire earth killing them twenty-one times. Renuka, the wife of the sage Jamadagni, was a devoted and obedient woman. She was completely loyal to her husband. However, a mistake led to a estrangement in their relationship, leading the sage to sentence her to death. According to the ancient story, Renuka once went to the river to fetch water. Renuka becomes infatuated with the Gandharva Chitrarath, who is playing in the water with the Apsaras, and the delay in fetching water causes the yajna to expire. Seeing his wife's unbecoming behavior, sage Jamadagni, using his yogic powers, commands his sons to kill their mother. However, the three sons refuse, and only Parashurama agrees. Jamadagni then renders his three sons unconscious, and Parashurama, following his father's orders, kills their mother. Seeing Parashurama's devotion to his father, Jamadagni asks him to ask for a boon. Parashurama asks his father to forgive his mother and restore her to life, and to restore all his brothers to consciousness. Thus, as a result of his blessings, his mother and brother are restored to life.
