Not only do they compete for resources with other native insect species, they also damage electrical equipment around homes. The crazy ant is very small, typically around an eighth of an inch long. They range in color from tan to black. Unlike most ants, their legs and antennae are very long compared to their bodies. They get their name from their unpredictable and erratic movements. Most ants travel in an orderly line, following a pheromone trail. Crazy ants do move in loose trails, but also forage randomly in any direction. Crazy ants do not make a typical ant hill, but instead nest near the ground’s surface. Check for nests and activity around flower and mulch beds; under yard debris like rocks, bricks, wood piles or leaf litter; check along walkways and pavement, and look around water spigots and drainage runoffs. Inside, check in wall voids, cracks and crevices, behind electrical fixtures, and under kitchen and bathroom sinks. HOW TO CONTROL CRAZY ANTS: 1:11 Start outside with a liquid concentrate like Dominion 2L or Reclaim IT. Both of these liquid insecticides are great to use for ants and other insects, offering quick knockdowns and long residuals. Reclaim IT also has the added benefit of being a repellent. Spray crazy ant nesting sites such as flower and mulch beds, yard debris, and landscaping. Then create a barrier around your home by spraying three feet up the structure and three feet out. Also spray around windows, doors, and other points of entry. Next, use D-Fense Dust inside. The is a waterproof insecticidal dust that is great for applications to hard to reach areas. Use D-Fense with a duster, and dust inside wall voids, under appliances, around plumbing, behind baseboards, and behind electrical fixtures. If crazy ants invaded your home, use a insecticidal bait like Ficam or Ant-Trax. Ficam is a granular bait that can be placed, spread, or puffed into voids. Ant-Trax is a sweet gel bait that comes in a syringe for easy application. Crazy ants are attracted to both protein and sugars, so both baiting options can be effective. Apply Ficam near sinks or drains, around appliances, or around bathroom fixtures. Or apply Ant-Trax in locations where ant activity is common, such as kitchens, near appliances, near baseboards, and entry points. When baiting, be sure to remove any competing food sources by picking up pet food or storing food in airtight containers. Finally, prevent crazy ants from returning by continuing to eliminate food sources in your home. Clean countertops, sweep, and vacuum regularly. Remove water sources by fixing any leaky plumbing. Remove yard debris, and trim vegetation back from the house. And spray follow up applications of Reclaim IT or Dominion 2L every three months for continued protection.
