There’s a lot of debate around non-contact voltage testers. Some electricians say never trust them. Others use them every day. In this video, I break down where a tic-tracer is useful, where it is not, and why so many people get hurt when they use the wrong tester for the wrong job. We walk through the real difference between checking for the presence of voltage and proving the absence of voltage before you put your hands in a panel. Then we get into the science behind how these testers actually work, including capacitive coupling, electric fields, difference of potential, and why things like your body position, insulation, and even standing on the ground vs being on a ladder can affect what a tester sees. Big thanks to Fluke for sponsoring this one. In the video I show several Fluke tools, including the Fluke 1AC II, the Fluke LVD2, and an always-on Fluke 2AC style tester, and explain where each one fits in the field. I also reference the Fluke T6-1000 when talking about verifying circuits with an actual meter. Bottom line: a non-contact voltage tester is great for helping you find out if something is energized. It is not the tool you trust with your life to prove a circuit is dead. For that, grab a real meter, verify your readings, and do a proper test-for-dead routine. If this helped, drop a comment with your go-to voltage tester and how you use it in the field.
