Starting from the Kharif 2026 season, two new risk categories will be included under crop insurance: crop losses due to wild animal attacks and paddy inundation. This decision comes in response to long-pending demands from several states, especially those with forest-adjacent farmlands and flood-prone paddy regions. Under the new framework, wild animal attacks will be added as the fifth localised risk, with state governments identifying the specific animals and vulnerable regions. Farmers will need to report the loss within 72 hours, along with geotagged photos, through the Crop Insurance App. Paddy inundation coverage, which was earlier removed, has also been reinstated to support coastal and flood-affected farmers.
