The talk by poet and writer Sergei Gandlevsky, part of the "In His Own Words" series, will be dedicated to the literary scholar and remarkable poet Lev Losev. "Lev Losev's poems, when I first encountered them long ago in the Parisian magazine Echo, immediately had the effect of a glass of vodka downed in one gulp: my eyes widened and I exhaled (incidentally, the first section of his first book is called "In Memory of Vodka"). The fiery water and this lyricism were connected by a sudden sensation of lightness and freedom—a freedom of language: this is how literature lets the reader know that the author has overcome the constraints and prejudices of literary commonplaces and is now responsible for his own words. And so I began searching the tables of contents of the émigré journals that occasionally found their way into our comradely circle for a familiar name with an academic-philosophical flavor."
