Salmon fishing in Norway is on many anglers’ bucket lists – and for good reason. The Atlantic salmon is the king of Norway’s fish species: big, powerful, and fascinating. With around 450 salmon rivers across the country, Norway has long been a dream destination for anglers from all over the world. In the old days, kings, lords, and wealthy gentlemen traveled to Norway’s legendary rivers to chase these magnificent fish. Every Norwegian angler has seen those black-and-white photos of English lords standing proudly with rows of 20-kilo salmon. Sadly, that era is long gone. Today, the Atlantic salmon faces serious challenges, and populations in many rivers are declining. Too many threats make it impossible for salmon to thrive like they once did – a heartbreaking reality for those who love this fish. But salmon fishing is about so much more than just catching a fish. It’s tradition, meditation, and pure excitement. No matter how hard it gets, there will always be anglers standing by the riverbank, chasing that dream. This year, I experienced something rare – a season that felt like stepping back in time. In a remote, rugged wilderness river I visit a few times each season, conditions lined up perfectly. It’s not a typical salmon river; it’s wild, hard to reach, and unpredictable. But when everything comes together, it can be magical. And this year, it was alive with salmon – just like the old days.
