Russia is holding a scaled-down Victory Day parade this May 9th in Red Square, amid a backdrop of the war in Ukraine and fears of potential drone attacks. The Kremlin has decided to forgo the traditional display of tanks, missiles, and other military vehicles—something unprecedented in nearly two decades—attributing the decision to the “operational situation” and the threat of Ukrainian activity. The commemoration, with which Moscow remembers the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany in World War II, remains one of Vladimir Putin's most symbolic political events, although this year it projects a more restrained and defensive image than one of military might.
