5 Over 4 Polyrhythm drum lesson DRUM POLYRHYTMS FOR NERDS - How to play 5:4 polyrhythm [and 4:5]

It's a bit tricky to get this, but essentially you have to start by playing quintuplets in 4/4... this is the easy part. After you've got the quintuplets smooth, next you'll at an accent to every 4th note. If you're playing the quintuplets on the snare drum and overlaying that on top of quarter notes in the bass drum, you'll start to hear that there are 5 accents for every 4 bass drum hits. Onces you've got that, you can essentially just take away the non accented notes in the hands and you're left with the 5 over 4 polyrhythms. The next part in this drum lesson covers the 4 over 5 rhythm. For this crossrhythm, you'll start pumping quarter notes in the bass drum to the time signature of 5/4, then just play sixteenth notes in the hands. Once you're able to get this technique down to where you can play it repeatedly without any bumps, you'll want to start playing accents on the snare every 5th 16th note. Similar to the previous groove, you'll start to hear the macro 4 beats over the 5 in the bass drum. Once you can perform this drum beat without screwing up, just take away the non accented notes in the hands... and PRESTO! You've got yourself a 4 over 5 drum groove!
