This Abandoned Children’s Hospital Still Has Power Inside

This abandoned children’s hospital was left behind years ago - but inside, parts of the building never truly went dark. Lights still flicker in dark hallways. Emergency signs hum from the ceilings. Systems once meant to guide families, patients, and staff continue to glow inside a place that’s otherwise silent and decaying. Walking through it doesn’t feel like something forgotten - it feels like a space that’s still awake. Long pediatric hallways stretch into darkness, with children’s murals still lining the walls. Directional signage points toward rooms and services that no longer exist, while collapsed ceilings, water damage, and debris have taken over spaces once designed to feel safe. Moving through the hospital, the contrast becomes impossible to ignore - a place built to care for people, still holding onto pieces of itself like this. Let’s explore. History: For decades, this former hospital served as a major pediatric and women’s healthcare facility for the region, providing emergency services, inpatient care, and specialized treatment for children and families. Located in Buffalo, New York, the hospital played a critical role in the community before officially closing in 2017, after Kaleida Health consolidated services and relocated operations to the newly built Oishei Children’s Hospital downtown. Following the closure, the original hospital complex was left vacant as long-term redevelopment plans slowly took shape. Portions of the property were later incorporated into the Elmwood Crossing project, while other sections of the abandoned healthcare facility remained unused. As maintenance declined, interior spaces deteriorated - ceilings collapsed, water damage spread, and once-secure medical corridors were left exposed to decay. Today, the abandoned sections of the former children’s hospital stand as a stark reminder of how quickly essential institutions can be left behind. What was once a place of care, urgency, and constant movement now exists as a quiet, decaying structure, with traces of its former purpose still visible throughout the building.
