Episode 2: The Mushroom Farm On the evening of February 13, 1984, a fire broke out in a former mushroom farm in Auderghem. Firefighters discovered the charred body of a young girl. What does this crime scene tell us? What were the initial analyses of the body? And above all, what could have happened to this young girl? In this second episode of the podcast "The Mushroom Farm Murder," we discover the circumstances in which firefighters, called to a routine house fire, found the partially burned body of Christine Van Hees. Among the firefighters present that evening, retired Norbert Vanden Berghen describes his progress through the site's basement. This second episode also features testimony from forensic pathologist Boxho, shedding light on the contents of the 1984 autopsy report. Christine was not burned alive. No traces of smoke were found in her respiratory tract. However, the condition of her body made it difficult to determine the nature of the violence she had suffered. Certain details led investigators to conclude that mechanical asphyxiation was the cause of her death. Clues found at the crime scene—notebooks, earrings—established the link between her disappearance and the body found in the cellars of the former mushroom farm. On February 17, 1984, a public appeal for witnesses was launched. A couple of grocers and a doctor living on Van Hees Street reported seeing Christine near her home, and then again about 200 meters from the mushroom farm. She was with a young man of her own age. There's talk of a leather jacket, hair styled like Elvis Presley—the timing is consistent with the time of the crime. Chantal V., a former school friend, recounts what Christine Van Hees allegedly said shortly before her death. Her words resonate tragically when you know what happened next. She spoke of meeting a young member of a gang who all wanted to force her to do things she didn't want to do. A gang she couldn't leave without risking her life. A few weeks after the murder, the police received a tip. A young "punk" had reportedly boasted to some of his friends about witnessing the murder, mentioning a particularly gruesome detail. A first solid lead emerged, and it will be the focus of the next two episodes. The investigative team behind the podcast makes progress in their investigation with each episode.
