Dom Luis Bridge Built as an offering to King Luis I, it was named Ponte Dom Luis I, in his honor. At the time of its inauguration, in 1886, the king did not appear to dignify and thank the masterpiece. In fact, this King was known not to “embrace” royal power and rarely fulfill his royal duties. And as punishment for its conduct, the local population renamed the Bridge, leaving (only) Ponte Luís I. This bridge is a symbol of the city of Porto. Entirely built in iron, it conveys confidence and grandeur. The best ways to get to know it are on a Douro Cruise or walking along the lower deck towards the Vila Nova de Gaia Pier, where the famous Port Wine Cellars are located. If you prefer, you can opt for the upper deck, where you'll get the best view over the city, the river and surroundings.
