UPS BATTERY CHARGING - FLOAT VS BOOST EXPLAINED Incorrect charging voltage is one of the biggest reasons UPS batteries fail years earlier than expected. This video explains float charging, boost charging, and why temperature compensation is critical for battery life. 🔋 FLOAT CHARGING (NORMAL OPERATION) Float charging maintains the battery at full capacity. Typical VRLA range: 2.23 to 2.27 volts per cell Used almost continuously in UPS systems. Risks: Voltage too high → water loss and overheating Voltage too low → sulfation and capacity loss ⚡ BOOST CHARGING (PERIODIC) Boost charging is a higher voltage charge used occasionally. Typical VRLA range: 2.35 to 2.40 volts per cell Purpose: Equalize cells Remove sulfation Risks: Generates heat and gas Can reduce battery life if overused Generally limited use in modern VRLA systems 🌡 TEMPERATURE COMPENSATION (CRITICAL) Battery voltage must adjust with temperature. Typical rule: Voltage reduces by about 3 mV per degree Celsius per cell above 25 degree baseline. Example: Higher temperature → lower charging voltage required Without temperature compensation: Batteries get overcharged at high temperature Accelerates aging and failure ⚠️ COMMON REAL-WORLD ISSUE Many UPS systems have temperature probes. But in real sites: Probe may be disconnected Sensor may be faulty 👉 This is often discovered only after battery failure ⚖️ OVERCHARGING VS UNDERCHARGING Overcharging causes: Water loss Bulging High temperature Reduced life Undercharging causes: Sulfation Reduced capacity Voltage drop 👉 Both conditions damage batteries 🎯 KEY TAKEAWAY Correct charging is not optional. It directly determines: battery life system reliability maintenance cost 🧠 FM BEST PRACTICE Verify charging voltage settings Ensure temperature probe is connected Monitor battery temperature regularly Avoid unnecessary boost charging Document charging parameters 👍 If this video helped you Like the video Subscribe for practical facility engineering content Share with your engineering or operations team More videos coming on UPS systems, DG, BMS, failures, and real-world FM lessons.
