This Japanese fighter defeated Corsairs and Hellcats in combat. History tells the incredible transformation of the Japanese Kawanishi N1K1 Kyofu floatplane into one of the finest fighters of World War II. Kawanishi created the unique N1K2-J Shiden-Kai, which surpassed the legendary A6M Zero in speed, maneuverability, and firepower. Its revolutionary mercury-operated automatic combat flaps made this fighter unrivaled in aerial combat. The elite 343rd Air Group, commanded by the legendary Minoru Genda, scored victories over American F6F Hellcats and F4U Corsairs, but the aircraft arrived too late to change the outcome of the war. Only 401 Shiden-Kais out of 1,400 Shiden variants were produced, and the war ended on August 14, 1945, with the disbandment of this elite unit.
