The Renaissance of Ybor City

This mini-documentary explores the ongoing renaissance of Ybor City, a U.S. National Historic Landmark District in Tampa, Florida. In 1886, Vicente Martinez-Ybor established his cigar manufacturing business in an area northeast of downtown Tampa. Ybor City was born. At its peak, this neighborhood produced up to 500 million cigars annually, earning the title of the cigar capital of the world. Immigrants from Cuba, Spain, Italy, and other countries enriched the area with their cuisine and culture. However, the advent of cigarettes and the declining popularity of cigars in the early 20th century led to the closure of cigar factories, leaving the neighborhood blighted. Over the decades, Ybor City transformed into a nightlife district, retaining many of its historical landmarks along with its cultural and culinary heritage. In recent years, significant investments from local government and private enterprises have revitalized Ybor City, positioning it to become one of the most vibrant neighborhoods in the United States.
