In this Spiritual Direction Program from Canção Nova, Father Fábio de Melo reflects on: The Nature of God's Gifts and Cultivation God's gifts, including happiness, are given as seeds that require cultivation on our part to become reality. Baptism, as a gift of new life, is given freely, but requires conscious effort to be realized as one becomes aware. Just as a seed contains all the possibilities of a plant, a divine gift condenses all possibilities within us. Understanding Essential vs. Accidental Being Happiness is a deeper concept than merely expressing joy; it stems from personal harmony and serenity. It is important to distinguish between "being" (what someone essentially is) and "being in the moment" (a temporary state). Essential realities are immutable aspects of our being, such as dignity. Accidental realities are temporary states or choices that do not alter our essence, such as a tree that is essentially wood but accidentally a table. Our essential intelligence is a gift, while how we use it (for example, as a lawyer or doctor) is accidental. Happiness, Fulfillment, and Self-Knowledge Human fulfillment is a preferred concept over happiness, as it encompasses the cultivation of the divine gift within us. Fulfillment depends primarily on self-knowledge, as one cannot perceive who one is without knowing oneself. Self-knowledge is acquired through research, self-observation, and asking parents about childhood experiences. Parents offer unique insights into our early life and how we faced difficulties, influencing who we are today. Understanding oneself is like assembling a puzzle, connecting present behaviors to past experiences, especially those accumulated in the unconscious. The Unconscious and its Influence The unconscious is an unknown but active part of our being that significantly impacts our behaviors. Behaviors dictated by unconscious motives are difficult to change because their causes are unknown. Adult fears may be unconscious fears stemming from childhood traumas that were not processed through the filters of maturity. The unconscious often manifests itself through dreams, which are moments when conscious control is reduced, allowing unconscious messages to surface. Bringing unconscious reasons to consciousness through therapeutic processes, such as conversation, is liberating and frees someone from oppression. When fears become conscious, reason can help manage and unmask them, unlike unconscious fears which are uncontrollable forces. Panic disorder, for example, can be a manifestation of childhood fears stored in the subconscious, resurfacing due to current emotional fragility. Self-knowledge helps to deal with mental illnesses such as panic disorder and to gain control over emotions. Self-knowledge involves observing one's own way of living and being, leading to contact with who we are and what we can become. It is crucial to pursue dreams and aspirations while healthy, as physical disposition and joy can diminish over time. We should take our dreams out of the drawers and make them a reality while we are still healthy enough.
