In the late Heian period, it became the central mountain of Tamba Shugendo, and Daigakuji Temple was located there as its sacred site. Near the summit of Mt. Ontake, there is a large stone chamber dedicated to En no Gyoja, which gives an indication of its former prosperity. However, it seems that there was a small dispute between Tamba Shugendo and Omine Shugendo in Nara Prefecture. A member of Omine Shugendo said, "Come and pray at Mt. Omine in Nara Prefecture." To which a member of Tamba Shugendo replied, "It's too far. That's impossible." Disputes from this era are a bit dangerous. Angry extremist Omine Shugendo sect members invaded the Taki mountain range and burned down all the temples, including Daigaku-ji Temple. As a result of this incident, Tamba Shugendo was destroyed. We don't know what exactly took place, but it seems that there were power struggles within Shugendo as well. However, traces of Tamba Shugendo remain in the Taki mountain range even today. And it seems that mountain ascetics still climb the mountain today. The mountain of faith has been passed down through the ages. This time we will be traversing from Ontake to Koganegatake.
