Where Chess Meets Architecture | Soil Stories Pavilion, Kerala
Soil Stories is a quiet pavilion rooted in the land—designed as a space for chess, conversation, and pause. This chess pavilion in Kozhikode, Kerala began as a small chess academy and evolved into a multi-functional community space. Designed by Magicline Studio, the project explores tropical architecture, minimal architecture, and context-driven design in India, responding to existing trees, contours, and micro-ecologies with minimal disturbance. The architecture does not impose. It settles. Organised across three levels, the pavilion creates a natural sequence of arrival, learning, and gathering. A single sloping roof responds to the canopy of an existing tamarind tree, opening toward the landscape while anchoring the built form. Materiality remains restrained—oxide finishes, terracotta jaalis, exposed concrete, and recycled roofing sheets—reflecting a sustainable architecture approach that blends with the plantation setting. This is not just a building. It is a setting—for thought, for play, for community.
