This is a last-ditch attempt at surgical excision to find the cause. Caution: I do not recommend doing this in October. Staghorn ferns are generally resilient plants, but once they are seriously damaged, they take time to recover. However, even if the roots or leaves are damaged, it is often possible to salvage the plant as long as the growing point remains viable. In this case, the Ridley ferns had no roots at all, but the growing point did not appear to have withered.
