On Mother's Day, a woman who is a victim of gender-based violence made a public and urgent appeal to Dominican authorities to guarantee her protection, that of her minor daughter, and that of her own mother, given her fear for their safety and the lack of effective enforcement of existing court orders. The complainant, identified as Yennifer Marín, stated that she and her daughter have been in hiding for almost three months for their safety, after reporting new episodes of violence attributed to her ex-partner, Luis Enrique Evertsz. In Criminal Sentence No. 249-05-2021-SSEN-00291, issued on January 17, 2022, by the Third Collegiate Court of the Criminal Chamber of the Court of First Instance of the National District, Evertsz was found guilty of aggravated gender-based and domestic violence and sentenced to five years of suspended imprisonment under specific conditions imposed by the court. These conditions included refraining from using violence or intimidation against the victim.
