Driven by a burning passion for the đàn đá (lithophone), Meritorious Artisan A Huynh—a native of Chot Village (Sa Thay Commune, Quang Ngai Province)—has dedicated himself to scouring deep forests for suitable stones. He meticulously shapes and tunes them to create resonant bars that echo the sounds of streams and the wind amidst the vast wilderness. He is widely known as the man who "breathes soul into stone," thanks to his exceptional talent in both crafting and performing on this instrument—one of Vietnam's oldest forms of percussion. After completing his military service in 2024, A Huynh returned to farming. During his breaks, he would often strike stones together, listening to the clear, ringing tones they produced. These sounds evoked memories of his father’s stories about ancient Gia Rai customs, where the power of water was harnessed to drive bamboo strikers against stones, scaring away wildlife to protect the crops.
