Der Ketzer, der zum heimlichen Herzen der deutschen Philosophie wurde | Doku
Baruch de Spinoza—one of the most important and yet most misunderstood thinkers of the early modern period. In this comprehensive biographical documentary, we trace the life of a man born in seventeenth-century Amsterdam, who at the age of twenty-three was ostracized by his own community and yet—or perhaps precisely because of this—rose to become a spiritual father of modern philosophy. From the alleys of the Portuguese-Jewish community to the quiet workshop of the lens grinder and on to the studies of Lessing, Goethe, and Hegel, this film follows the trail of a thinker whose work was banned and condemned during his lifetime, yet whose name would come to permeate the poetry and philosophy of an entire nation. It is the story of an outcast who found a rare form of freedom in solitude, and of a book that was threatened with extinction but outlived its persecutors. This documentary will feature, among other things: — Amsterdam as a refuge for Marranos fleeing the Inquisition and the world into which Spinoza was born — his upbringing, his first doubts, and the shadow of Uriel da Costa — the great excommunication of 1656 and its still-controversial background — the lens-grinding craft and encounters with Huygens and Leibniz — the geometric method and his close circle of friends — the Theological-Political Treatise and the struggle for freedom of thought — the unfortunate year of 1672 and the death of the de Witt brothers — ethics and the bold doctrine of God or nature — the quiet death in The Hague and the rescue of the manuscripts — Spinoza's rediscovery by Lessing, Goethe, Herder, Fichte, Schelling, and Hegel This episode is for anyone interested in the history of philosophy, European intellectual history, and the great thinkers of the early modern period.
