Thirty-eight years ago, master electrician Heinrich Jung started his own business, "Blitzblume" (Lightning Flower), repairing broken household appliances. He's a man of conviction: "Blitz" stands for electrical, "Blume" for sustainability. "We throw away far too much," he says. Many of the things that surround us have a built-in point of failure, designed for decay: stoves, toasters, blenders, washing machines, smartphones, and razors are intentionally not built to last. Experts call this "planned obsolescence"—the idea that decay will force us to discard and consume. But is this still acceptable in the face of growing mountains of plastic and electronic waste, in times of dwindling resources? Heinrich Jung is not only the founder of a repair café, he's also a member of the "Round Table Repair"—an association that opposes manufacturers' attempts to prevent repairs.
