Trains at Pakenham - Melbourne Transport
In this video we visit Pakenham, a station situated at the edge of the universe. Well not exactly but it may as well be; at 58.193km away from Southern Cross Station, its the furthest station on the electrified rail network away from Melbourne. We start the video at the station platforms where we see a number of Siemens EMU's (no Comeng's as they were all sleeping), a couple of V/Line Vlocity DMU's, and a N Class locomotive hauled train operating the up Bairnesdale pass towards Melbourne. We also take a quick tour inside a Siemens train. Next we see clips recorded at the Main Street level crossing outside the station where this time we see nothing but Comeng EMU's (no Siemens this time around) and some more V/Line Vlocities. We then head off to the McGregor Road level crossing where we see some more trains. To finish the video we depart Pakenham onboard a life-extended EDI Comeng. Pakenham serves as the terminus of the Pakenham line. It opened in October 1877. The current station was built in 1959, with the pebblebrick station buildings constructed in 1970. Today it is the furthest extent of electrification, which once extended all the way to Traralgon. Constructed during the 1950's, electrification to Traralgon was built to meet expected coal and briquette traffic from the Latrobe Valley. However as freight traffic declined and the cost of maintaining the electric infrastructure was deemed unfeasible, electrification was scaled back from 1987 onwards, eventually ending at Pakenham in 2001. Another unique fact about Pakenham station is that its only one of two Metro station where passengers are allowed to use V/Line services to and from Melbourne (the other being Sunbury). I'm personally not a big fan of Pakenham station; it's facilities are dated and inadequate for the number of passengers served. By biggest problem is the narrow entranceway to the station as passengers are funneled through the small enclosed waiting area and doors. And if a train is departing platform 2, have fun missing your train as the only way to access the platform is to cross over the pedestrian crossing over the tracks. The good news is that Pakenham will soon be rebuilt into a new 'super station'. Pakenham will be rebuilt to remove three level crossings in the area at McGregor Road, Main Street and Racecourse Road.
