This book uses a 32-hole rim, commonly used for hand-building. While it explains the standard 3-cross (= 6-rubber) rim construction, it also introduces other rim construction methods along with their theory, making it easy to adapt to other rim constructions. While there are many online explanations of "Italian" and "JIS" rim construction, to my knowledge, there are no easy-to-understand videos. Most of them feature a single person silently assembling a wheel, assuming that "this is a skill only a craftsman can master, so amateurs can just watch." I hate these types of videos and reject them outright. I assert: "Anyone can easily hand-build wheels, as long as they understand how!" We now live in the era of pre-built wheels, and the hand-built wheels commonly made by bike shops before 2000 have completely faded into obscurity. When I started riding road bikes in 2000, pre-built wheels were already becoming the trend. This boom was sparked by the infamous Mavic, who made their name with the Ksyrium wheel. I think it was Mavic that first introduced universal bearings to hubs (although this is not certain). I've digressed a bit.
