Central Park Carousel
The Central Park Carousel is located in southern Central Park in Manhattan. It is the fourth carousel at that location since 1871, the others having been destroyed in various fires. The present carousel was originally installed at Coney Island in Brooklyn until it fell into disuse in the 1940's. In 1951, it was brought to its new home in Central Park where it was restored, and has served millions of riders ever since. With its 57 magnificent hand-carved horses, it is a fine example of American folk art and one of the largest merry-go-rounds in the United States. Notably, the carousel is a setting in J.D. Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye.
