This video is a complete and in-depth musical analysis of the soundtrack for The Odyssey, Christopher Nolan's new film, composed by Ludwig Göransson. With the film already released and generating debate on all fronts, there's one aspect that almost no one is talking about: Nolan's decision to ban the traditional orchestra. This analysis is based on my experience as a professional composer, after more than a decade working in film, television, and advertising. I'm not here to give you my critique of the film, nor to discuss the cast or the controversy. I'm here to explain, note by note, how this soundtrack is constructed and why Nolan's decision is much riskier than it seems. Throughout the video, you'll discover why Nolan banned the orchestra and what he used instead, what the aulos—a Greek instrument that hadn't been played for 2,500 years—sounds like and how it was reconstructed, the true story behind the lyre played by Rosa Fragorapti and its curious origin in the video game Diablo IV, the four-note musical motif that represents Odysseus's (or Ulysses's, as we know him in Spanish) bow in scenes like the bow trial, how the dark counter-theme associated with Antinous and the Law of Zeus works, an analysis of the Ithaca theme and its "hearth chords," what exactly is heard when Odysseus confronts the Cyclops Polyphemus and the Sirens, the modal melody of the Laestrygonians and its striking resemblance to flamenco, and all the secrets hidden in the end credits song, "When I'm Home," co-written by Christopher Nolan himself.
