We're talking about La Gigantona, a tradition that brings humor and mischief to the streets of Nicaragua. The drumbeat barely begins before crowds gather at their doorsteps, ready to spill out into the street, drawn by La Gigantona's invitation. In the traditional celebration in the city of León, La Gigantona was accompanied by a folk singer, musicians, a giant puppet, and lantern bearers, but now it's different. In various cities across Nicaragua, La Gigantona is now accompanied by a man dressed as a woman, who walks seductively alongside her. Children and adults alike, upon hearing the music, momentarily forget what they're doing to go out and see this giant doll that brings with it revelry, merriment, rhythm, color, and a great deal of humor and mischief. The drummers keep the beat. They play tunes so the music never stops and La Gigantona never ceases to sway her shoulders in the midst of her joyful dance. Meanwhile, the folk singers recite rhymes full of humor and mischief, improvising on the spot, commissioned by a paying customer to hear their witty remarks. There is no precise date for when the Gigantona first appeared in Nicaragua; its origin is in the region of Catalonia, Spain. It represents a tribute to the beauty of Spanish women. "The Gigantona is an ancestral tradition dating back to colonization, where indigenous and Spanish cultures blended," and it has now become a mestizo expression. There is a folkloric association called “Viva León Jodido” (Long Live Damned León), an organization that brings together 17 families of giant puppeteers. They count approximately 102 giant puppets in León, and it is estimated that there are at least 200 throughout Nicaragua. In the city of León, every year during the first days of December, a parade takes place along the main streets, featuring the best giant puppets in Nicaragua, accompanied by rhythmic and folkloric dance troupes. Prizes are awarded for creativity, vibrant colors, and elaborate costumes. In Managua, near the Santo Domingo church, there is a traditional family who, in the afternoons, travel to different locations. There is no fixed address or neighborhood; their journey begins at 3:00 PM and continues until 10:00 PM. They travel more than 20 kilometers to raise money to support their family. Let's support this cultural expression, which is the livelihood of many Nicaraguans. Let's not allow this tradition to disappear. #LaGigantona #ThisIsNicaragua #LaGIGANTONAATraditionThatBringsHUMORANDMISCUEToTheStreetsOfNicaragua See also: 🎯At 5 YEARS OLD, he surprises everyone by PLAYING THE MARIMBA like a professional    • Con 5 AÑOS, sorprende TOCANDO LA MARIMBA c...   🎯Unusual THINGS that happen WHEN YOU DRIVE in Nicaragua    • ¡No creerás lo que pasa en las calles de N...   🎯 TRAVELING in Nicaragua BY TAXI costs LESS THAN $3    • VIAJAR por Nicaragua EN TAXI, cuesta MENOS...   🎯INSPIRATIONAL STORIES: Gerónimo Canales ACHIEVED his dream    • HISTORIAS que INSPIRAN Gerónimo Canales AL...   🎯LARGEST MARKET in CENTRAL AMERICA, located in NICARAGUA    • ¿Qué secretos esconde el mercado más grand...   This is Nicaragua, a digital platform where we showcase fascinating tourist destinations, our unique character, traditions, history, nature reserves, customs, and the gastronomy of our beautiful country, Nicaragua.
