Why NASA Destroyed Its Greatest Spacecraft On Purpose

On September 15, 2017, NASA flew a perfectly healthy spacecraft into Saturn and destroyed it on purpose. Nothing had failed. Every instrument was working. The plunge had been planned seven years in advance, and the reason had nothing to do with the spacecraft. It had to do with what the spacecraft found. In this calming long-form documentary, we trace the full story: the 1997 launch that protesters tried to stop, the water erupting through the ice of a moon nobody was watching, and the twenty-two final dives that ended with a machine narrating its own destruction. We walk through the buried ocean of Enceladus, the methane lakes and pebbled shore of Titan, and the eighty-three-minute light delay that meant Cassini had been dead for over an hour before anyone on Earth knew. This is not a simple explanation. This is the story of a civilization that built a machine to search for life, then destroyed that machine to keep from harming the life it found and of what Cassini was still sending home as it burned.
