COMMENT FAIRE POUR QU’UN CITRONNIER FLEURISSE ET FRUCTIFIE ? (LE QUOTIDIEN DU JARDIN émission N°28)
The entire NewsJardinTV team, the channel dedicated 100% to plants, gardens, botany, and gardening, has the pleasure and privilege of offering you this 28th issue of our daily show: "Le Quotidien du Jardin." This program is accessible to everyone for 24 hours, and then becomes available exclusively to NewsJardinTV Le Club members, who can view it at any time, along with all the "Bienvenue au Jardin" programs (starting with issue 68). Patrick Mioulane, editor-in-chief of NewsJardinTV, presents the show from his small garden in Essonne. He sits on a terrace decorated with generous flowering Calluna vulgaris planters. Also featured is a beautiful Japanese maple (Acer palmatum 'Seiryu') in its autumnal splendor and bonsai trees. These are part of the collection of the "Little Gardener," Nicole, who is filming the show. Patrick answers the question from our subscriber Fatou, who posted the following question on the website www.newsjardintv.com: My lemon tree is going to be three years old, but it's producing a lot of leaves and no fruit. What should I do? The flowering process in plants is due to a succession of two processes: floral initiation, which, through the reception of a set of signals, allows a vegetative bud to move into the fruiting bud stage, and floral differentiation (formation of the beginnings of the different floral organs). Poor exposure (lack of light, drafts) and a season that is too cool are the most common causes of a lack of flowering in citrus trees, particularly lemon trees. But that's not all... Young trees go through a phase of non-flowering called the "juvenile phase." Flowering generally does not occur within three years of grafting and remains sparse for the following two years. In citrus trees, floral induction is caused by stress, most often of environmental origin. In a Mediterranean climate, it is the low winter temperatures that generate this stress. Floral differentiation will begin as soon as temperatures become favorable again (in March), leading to the development of flowers in mid-May. For lemon trees grown indoors, it is essential to ensure that the nighttime temperature is lower than the daytime temperature. When citrus trees are not bearing flowers or fruit, it is important to significantly reduce watering to induce water stress. Flowering will then occur approximately two months after watering resumes. Be careful, this stress must not endanger the plant, so proceed with caution. Abundant vegetation, vigorous shoots, and intense green leaf color in winter are signs of very comfortable growing conditions for the tree... and therefore, not conducive to floral induction. Overfed trees flower much less.
