From Cook to POW: ‘There Is No Safe Job in the Army’

When Shoshana Johnson enlisted in the Army to pursue her culinary ambitions, she never envisioned she would end up behind enemy lines. During the war in Iraq in 2003, her company was ambushed outside the city of Nasiriyah, just north of Baghdad. Johnson and five others were captured and became prisoners of war. She was awarded the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart and the Prisoner of War Medal for her service in Iraq. Now retired from the military, Johnson still deals with the trauma of that fateful day.
