Stone Soup: A Recipe for Community Organizing | Marina Barnett | TEDxWidenerUniversity
We all know things that need to improve in our communities (e.g., social justice, sustainability, accessible health care), but many feel helpless and at a loss as to what to do about it. The first step to change is to change that helpless mindset with a simple recipe for community organizing. In her teaching practice, Dr. Marina Barnett focuses on advocacy and commitment to social justice, assessment, working with diverse populations, and the use of technology. Her vision for her students is that they see themselves as leaders capable of engaging any population. Her courses demonstrate the social work values of partnering with clients, non-judgementalism, and valuing the uniqueness and capabilities of individuals. An assessment of strengths is an integral aspect of both her teaching and her practice. Dr. Barnett believes that every person has inherent strengths and gifts that enable them to contribute to society and address their own issues. She seeks to inspire others to take control of their own education, to become active participants in their own lives and in their communities, and to be dedicated and committed to the eradication of social injustice. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
