This lecture continues with transient heat conduction, specifically in large plane walls, long cylinders and spheres. It shows how the exact equation for one dimensional heat transfer is derived for a large plane wall starting with the energy equation. It focuses on the principle of the derivation without doing all the mathematics and specifically why the problem is nondimensionalized. The lecture was based on the textbook of Cengel and Ghajar (4th ed) and was presented as part of a heat transfer class to the fourth year students of the Department of Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering by Prof Josua Meyer, Head of the Department of Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering of the University of Pretoria, South Africa. Lecture was presented on 10 February 2014.
