Microsoft's World-Shaking Majorana Super-Quantum Chip Brain! #vfacts, #majorana, #luongtu, @quantum, On February 19, Microsoft released a Youtube video, claiming that they had built a quantum processor using a type of virtual particle (quasi particles) that does not exist in nature. In other words, Microsoft has almost invented a new material, a new state of matter for their new quantum chip, which is expected to throw all the most advanced classical supercomputer systems into the landfill, when it is really completed. A laptop, can calculate and simulate the behavior of a system of 10 electrons. A supercomputer can solve the number 20. However, no classical computer can accurately simulate the behavior of 30, 40 or 50 electrons. The numbers may sound small, but if you had a classical computer the size of a planet, it would still take the lifetime of the universe. Meanwhile, a quantum computer with millions of qubits could do it in minutes. The problem is that qubits are extremely unstable, making it extremely difficult to maintain large numbers of them on the same chip. This explains why quantum computers, despite the hype and hype in the media, currently sit dormant in labs cooled to near absolute zero. At the near-critical cold of the Universe, atoms slow down, particles and fields have little energy to interact with qubits, and qubits are safe. But even today’s best quantum systems can only maintain a little over 1,000 qubits stable. And that’s where Microsoft comes in. Uncle Bill's old company claims that they have created a quantum architecture, called a Topological Core, that can store a million qubits on a single chip. And that's the architecture used on Majorana 1. Don't get too excited, Majorana 1 is NOT a 1,000,000 qubit quantum chip. But, it does have an architecture that allows for storing up to 1,000 qubits on a chip that can fit in the palm of your hand.
