It must be lightweight, stable, and easy to unfold. Modern ladders are most often made of aluminum and steel alloys. They are intended for home and professional use. They feature features that ensure safe use, such as grooved rungs, safety straps to prevent excessive spreading, anti-slip feet, and stabilizers that ensure the correct base width. To see how ladders are manufactured, we visited Polish manufacturer Drabest in Mników, located near the Balice airport and the A4 motorway. They have been producing ladders there for 30 years, with the process taking place on 15 production lines. Let's see how the production process works. We begin with the design of the selected model. During the design process, designers must consider, among other things, the geometric dimensions and durability of the product. Ladder safety is one of the most important aspects of use. To produce a ladder, we will need, among other things, aluminum and steel profiles with a specific cross-section. Components such as platforms, stirrups, and hooks will be made from steel strip. We begin with the production of multi-functional ladders. The most popular are three-section ladders. The process begins simultaneously in two locations on a fully automated line. On one side, the side rails are prepared. The profiles are automatically loaded onto the line. Next, the process holes are drilled. At the same time, the rungs are prepared on the other side. The 6-meter profiles are transferred to the saw, where they are cut into pieces. Next, the side rails and rungs are joined in the assembly section. The rungs are placed in previously prepared side rail holes. The coving formed in the riveting section ensures a safe rung termination. The entire segment is almost ready. It still needs to be equipped with anti-slip feet. Components allowing the ladder to be extended to position A and blocking the maximum extension of the segment are also installed. After the three segments are connected, components such as a stop and straps preventing the ladder from extending are installed. Let's take a closer look at the production of household ladders. They consist of two parts: the front and the support. These main components are manufactured from aluminum profiles, which must be bent accordingly. Holes are also drilled for mounting the support, platforms, steps, and straps. The steps are also made of aluminum profiles. We can see how the correct length is cut. Their ends are reinforced with plastic caps. The steps and platform are mounted to the front section. The steps are riveted. After connecting the front section to the support, the finished ladder is created. The plant also produces steel ladders. Unlike aluminum ladders, the steps are welded to the front section. Finally, the ladder is wrapped in heat-shrinkable foil to protect it from the elements before it reaches the customer. Manufactured ladders must meet European standards in accordance with occupational health and safety regulations. Therefore, the product's dimensions and strength are tested in the laboratory. Based on positive inspection results, the production batch is released. Drabest produces approximately one million ladders annually. Almost half of them are exported and are available in the online store drabest.pl, in wholesalers and in the largest retail chains, almost all over Europe.
