I Visited Charlotte’s Most Walkable New Development to Find Out 60% of Americans live in the suburbs, but are modern suburban neighborhoods finally improving? In this video, I explore one of Charlotte’s newest transit oriented developments located near the LYNX Blue Line light rail. From walkability and housing design to public spaces, transit access, urban planning, and neighborhood character, I spend an entire day walking the community to see if it lives up to the promise of a better suburban future. What I found surprised me. This development has dense housing, access to public transit, parks, playgrounds, and a layout that looks promising from above. But once I got on the ground, I discovered issues with architecture, public space design, connectivity, housing diversity, and how the project relates to the surrounding community. Along the way I examine: Charlotte suburban development Walkability and transit access Townhouse and rental housing design Urban planning mistakes and successes Public spaces and playgrounds Housing affordability Transit oriented development Neighborhood connectivity The future of suburbia And yes, the neighborhood featured on Love Is Blind Charlotte As an architect and urban planning enthusiast, I visit places in person to understand how cities, suburbs, neighborhoods, and buildings actually work beyond what maps and renderings show.
