Northern Morocco: Islam, Tradition & Decolonization from the Strait of Gibraltar

Islam, tradition, and decolonization from the perspective of Northern Morocco are discussed in this video. Using the southern shores of the Strait of Gibraltar as a place from which to think through these questions, the analysis draws on Walter Mignolo's concept of border thinking and Ibn Khaldun's concept of imitating the victor, while arguing that the Islamic tradition itself provides resources for decolonial thought. The video seeks to build a conversation between intellectual worlds that are too often kept apart: traditional Muslim thinkers such as Shaykh Hamza Yusuf and Abdal Hakim Murad, and decolonial thinkers such as Enrique Dussel, Ramón Grosfoguel, Hatem Bazian, and Salman Sayyid. Through the lenses of border thinking, cultural geography, and world-systems analysis, the Strait of Gibraltar emerges not simply as a frontier between continents, but as one of the key spaces in the formation of the modern colonial world-system and an enduring site of encounter, exchange, resistance, and reflection.
