Steenkampskraal's rare earth breakthrough that could anchor Africa's beneficiation - Tyrone Searle
Steenkampskraal Monazite Mine in the Western Cape, one of the world’s highest‑grade rare earth deposits, has reached a milestone that could reshape South Africa’s role in the global critical‑minerals landscape. The mine has successfully produced high‑purity mixed rare earths in partnership with the state mineral research agency, Mintek. It’s a breakthrough that goes beyond the lab: it demonstrates that a key stage of rare earth beneficiation, long dominated by China, can be done in South Africa. For decades, rare earth concentrate from around the world has been shipped almost exclusively to China for processing, giving Beijing a near‑monopoly over the most strategic part of the value chain. The mine says it has now proven that South Africa has both the resource and the scientific capability to process rare earths locally, and it has ambitions to go further. The vision is to build a rare earth processing hub for the continent, taking concentrate not only from its own deposit but from emerging projects across Africa, from Nigeria to the DRC. If realised, it would be one of the most significant shifts in Africa’s participation in the energy‑transition economy in years. CFO Tyrone Searle joins Linda van Tilburg to unpack what has been achieved, what it will take to scale it, and how this breakthrough could change South Africa’s place in the global rare earths value chain.
