Run-D.M.C.'s Tougher Than Leather was a success, but it couldn't match the massive impact of Raising Hell. Raising Hell (1986) - Sold roughly 3.2 million copies in the U.S. and Canada combined (and over 3 million in the U.S. alone). It became one of the defining hip-hop albums of the 1980s, driven by hits like "Walk This Way," "It's Tricky," and "My Adidas." Tougher Than Leather (1988) - Sold about 1 million copies in the U.S. (Platinum) plus around 50,000 in Canada (Gold). Peaked at No. 9 on the Billboard 200. Featured strong singles such as "Run's House," "Mary, Mary," and "I'm Not Going Out Like That." So while 1 million copies was an excellent result for a rap album in 1988, it was viewed as a disappointment because it followed one of the biggest hip-hop albums ever. Part of the reason was timing. By 1988, hip-hop had changed rapidly. Acts like Public Enemy, Eric B. & Rakim, EPMD, and Boogie Down Productions had shifted the sound toward denser sampling and more complex lyricism. Run-D.M.C.'s stripped-down, hard-rocking style suddenly seemed less cutting-edge, even though the album has since been reappraised as one of their strongest. Many fans todayargue that Tougher Than Leather is underrated and even prefer it to Raising Hell because of its darker, heavier production and harder-edged tracks like "Run's House" and "Beats to the Rhyme."
