It forms part of the larger Water Music collection, written for performance on the River Thames in London. The F major suite is the best known section of the set and includes some of Handel’s most memorable music, filled with bright fanfares, elegant dances, and the well-known hornpipes. Its sound is both grand and joyful, which has helped it remain popular for centuries. HISTORICAL CONTEXT The music is traditionally linked to King George I. In July 1717, the king took part in a royal excursion on the Thames while musicians performed from a nearby barge. Contemporary accounts say the king enjoyed the music so much that several movements were repeated. Handel, already an important figure in London musical life, was almost certainly involved in providing music for the event. Whether every movement was newly composed for that evening is uncertain, but the royal river celebration became permanently associated with the work. MUSICAL CHARACTER The suite is rich in contrast and variety. It opens in the grand French overture style, then moves through a series of dance-inspired movements such as minuets, bourrées, and hornpipes. Handel turns these familiar dances into lively orchestral pieces full of color and energy. A notable feature is the use of horns, whose bright outdoor sound was perfect for performance on the river and adds a festive brilliance to the music. MUSICAL SIGNIFICANCE This suite shows Handel’s remarkable ability to combine European styles. German by birth, influenced by Italy, and working in England, he blended French grandeur, Italian melody, and German craftsmanship into a natural and appealing whole. Water Music also reveals his gift for writing ceremonial music that is both sophisticated and immediately enjoyable.    • J.S.Bach Masterpieces      • J.S.Bach: 6 Cello Suites      • D.Scarlatti: Keyboard Sonatas      • Mozart: 18 Piano Sonatas      • Beethoven Masterpieces      • Beethoven: 9 Symphonies      • Beethoven: Piano Sonatas      • Schubert: 21 Piano Sonatas      • Chopin Masterpieces      • Chopin: 21 Mazurkas      • Chopin: 19 Polonaises      • Chopin: 22 Nocturnes      • Chopin: 19 Waltzes      • Schumann Masterpieces      • Liszt Masterpieces      • Brahms Masterpieces      • Tchaikovsky Masterpieces      • Debussy Masterpieces      • Ravel Masterpieces      • Prokofiev Masterpieces      • Prokofiev: 9 Piano Sonatas      • Piano Sonata Collection      • Piano Concerto Collection      • Violin Concerto Collection      • Suite Collection
