Carneiro submitted more than 19,000 signatures supporting his candidacy for the MPLA leadership—far exceeding the 11,108 submitted by Lourenço. Then came the criminal charges. Angola’s Attorney General accused Carneiro of embezzlement and money laundering connected to his time as governor of Cuando-Cubango. Carneiro denies wrongdoing and claims the timing is politically motivated.
