The Sky Is Always Shining: A Buddhist Teacher Speaks at a Unitarian Church

What do Buddhism and Unitarian Universalism have in common? More than you might expect. In this talk given at the Inland Northwest Unitarian Universalist Community (INUUC) congregation in Spokane, Washington, Catherine Pawasarat Sensei — co-founder of Clear Sky Retreat Center in British Columbia — offers a heartfelt exploration of Buddhist practice as it's actually lived: in community, in relationship, and in service to all beings. Sensei shares the story of Clear Sky — a small residential conscious community she co-founded with her late teacher and partner Qapel — and reflects on what it means to experiment with how humans can live together more wisely and kindly. She explores the concept of 'Clear Sky Mind', offers an accessible definition of enlightenment as something we've all already tasted, and walks through the Eightfold Path in a way that finds surprising resonance with the seven principles of Unitarian Universalism. Along the way she touches on grief, bodhisattvas, wildfire preparedness, samadhi as a flow state, and why the universe doesn't mind doing the work.
