GARBUZYUK Oleksa (29. 03. 1920, Hory farm, near the village of Berehy, Mlynivskyi district, Rivne region – 04. 10. 1997, Elmhurst, Chicago region) – church figure. Studied theology and journalism in Germany. From 1949 – in Chicago, pastor of the Ukrainian Baptist Church (1949–55 and 1982–92). In 1968–72 – president, 1972–96 – general secretary of the Ukrainian Evangelical Baptist Assembly in the USA. 1972–90 – head of the All-Ukrainian Evangelical Baptist Brotherhood. Director of the publication “The Way of Truth”. Host of the radio program "Voice of the Gospel", broadcast to Ukraine 1966–93, editor-in-chief (1975–81) and deputy editor-in-chief (1981–97) of the same "Messenger of Truth". He made speeches against religious persecution in the USSR, in particular at the International Council of Christian Churches in 1968 in Geneva. He helped the emigration of church figures persecuted in the USSR. He visited independent Ukraine 4 times. Member of the secretariat of the World Congress of Free Ukrainians (1978) and executive director of the American Council of Christian Churches. Oleksa Harbuzyuk was the director of radio programs sponsored by the Ukrainian Baptist Church of Chicago for radio broadcasting in the Chicago area, as well as for radio programs sponsored by the All-Ukrainian Evangelical Baptist Fellowship for shortwave broadcasting to Soviet Ukraine. From 1952 to 1993 he worked as a radio pastor. Thus, people living in other countries could hear these programs.     Local broadcasting began in 1952 on the WSBC radio station (1240 AM). A shortwave radio program broadcast for five years from the HCJB station in Quito, Ecuador. For example, in 1953, 30-minute radio programs were broadcast on HCJB on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. The preachers were John Barchuk, Moses Gitlin, Ol. Longinov, and Garbuzyuk.     In 1966, programs began to be broadcast from a transceiver radio in Monte Carlo, Monaco under the name "Voice of the Gospel to Ukraine". The first program was broadcast on the radio channel on June 23, 1966 at 6:20 p.m. Kyiv time. Later, other stations were used. Until 1989, radio programs sponsored by the All-Ukrainian Evangelical Baptist Society were broadcast to Ukraine and the Soviet Union daily. A weekly program for children was included. Harbuziuk Oleksa (Olexa R. Harbuziuk) (1920 - 1997) Born on March 29, 1920, in the village of Hory, near the village of Berehy, Mlyniv district, Rivne region. Pastor of the Evangelical Christian Baptist Church (ECB) (1927). Human rights activist, fighter for religious freedom in Ukraine. Emigrated to Germany, then in 1949 moved to the USA. Married to Sofia Harbuziuk (born ca. 1927). Pastor of the Ukrainian Evangelical Christian Baptist Church in Chicago (1949-1955, 1982-1992). In 1985, he moved with the church to Berwyn (near Chicago) (Illinois, USA). For 18 years he was the president of the All-Ukrainian Evangelical Baptist Fellowship (Ukrainian Union of Evangelical Baptist Christians) (USA), for 28 years he was the president and general secretary of the Ukrainian Convention of Evangelical Baptist Christians in the USA. President of the publishing house "Doroga Pravdy" (1965-1972). Director of the radio station "Holos Evangeliya", broadcasting to Ukraine (1966-1993). Editor-in-chief (1975-1981) (later co-editor (1981-1997)) of the magazine "Messenger of Truth". In 1978 he was elected a member of the presidium of the World Congress of Free Ukrainians. Since 1992, he has been the honorary pastor of the Ukrainian Evangelical Baptist Church in Berwyn. At the same time, he worked for 29 years at the company "GTE Automatic Electronic" in Northlake (Illinois, USA) and retired in 1983 as a Data Processing Supervisor. He facilitated the release of Pastor Georgi Vins from Soviet camps and his arrival in Chicago. He died on October 4, 1977 in Elmhurst (Illinois, USA) from cancer. He is buried in Elmwood Cemetery in River Grove.
