The story of UNESUL comes to an end… and with it, an important chapter in the history of Brazilian road transport also ends. 🚍 For thousands of passengers, especially in Rio Grande do Sul, traveling by bus was practically synonymous with traveling with UNESUL. Whether on state lines connecting the interior of Rio Grande do Sul to the capital, or on interstate trips to Santa Catarina and Paraná, the company marked entire generations. For decades, it transported stories, reunions, farewells, dreams, longing, and new beginnings. Many people boarded a UNESUL bus carrying hope in their luggage. Others returned home after months away from their families. The origins of this journey began in the 1940s with União Erechim de Transportes, responsible for important connections between Erechim, Passo Fundo, Caxias do Sul, and Porto Alegre. In 1964, UNESUL officially emerged, initially with 16 lines and 65 buses, considered at the time the largest interstate company in Rio Grande do Sul. Over more than 60 years of operation, the company grew and transformed into a giant of the roads in southern Brazil. In recent years, UNESUL transported approximately 8 million passengers per year, operating around 400 buses, more than 200 lines, and serving more than 400 cities. In August 2016, operational control of the company passed to Viação Ouro e Prata and Planalto Transportes. Now, in 2026, the ANTT (National Agency for Land Transport) officially ratified the definitive incorporation by the two companies and the end of Unesul. Planalto Transportes will be responsible for 15 routes originating from UNESUL's operation, while the rest of the network will be the responsibility of Viação Ouro e Prata. Changes have already begun to appear on the roads. In just a few days, buses were transferred, paint schemes began to disappear, and a historic brand gradually ceased to exist before the eyes of passengers. It is still unknown what the definitive fate of the UNESUL brand will be. There is the possibility of its use in some specific segment, such as charter services, but the most likely path seems to be the same as that of so many other traditional Brazilian companies: the path of nostalgia.
