The Isley Brothers Origin Story (An Isley Brothers History)

The Isley Brothers are one of the greatest, longest-lasting bands (and brands) in rock / soul music history. They started out as a gospel vocal quartet of Ronald, Rudolph, O'Kelly, and Vernon, until Vernon was tragically killed after being struck by a car while riding his bike in his neighborhood. They later re-emerged as a vocal trio, had a few hits and a lot of misses through the late 50s and 60s, which their hits including Shout!, Twist and Shout, This Old Heart of Mine (Is Weak For You), and their biggest hit, 1969's Its Your Thing. Its Your Thing was the start of their movement, which was to include their younger brothers Ernie Isley and Marvin Isley and their brother-in-law Chris Jasper. This lineup changed them from being a vocal trio to a band, with Chris Jasper becoming their main songwriter, composer, arranger, producer and keyboardist. This would lead to their most profilic and popular period, with several hits and great albums through the 70s and into the early 80s. Some of those hits included For the Love of You, their re-make of their 60s song Who's That Lady called That Lady, Summer Breeze, Footsteps in the Dark, Voyage to Atlantis, Make Me Say it Again Girl, Let Me Down Easy, Between the Sheets, Choosey Lover and more. This video discusses the origin of The Isley Brothers, and take us up to the 70s period. They would, by the way, continue to have success after the band broke up, where Chris Jasper created Isley Jasper Isley and then Ronald Isley and Ernie Isley brought The Isley Brothers brand into the 1990s, collaborating with R Kelly and Babyface, and even into the 2000s with their hit Contagious.
