Why Are People Renting VHS Tapes Again In 2026?

In this video, I discuss a very interesting phenomenon. I've noticed over the past year or so that more and more businesses are popping up all over North America that are once again renting VHS tapes. This really intrigues me. I have often wondered what are the reasons behind this. As mentioned in the video, I certainly think that nostalgia is a big factor. People remember fondly the days of going to the video store and renting some tapes to view over the weekend. People like myself who grew up in that era are trying to recapture that magical and fun feeling. Also, I think the younger crowd who were not around to experience this at that time would like to experience it now. Nostalgia is indeed a driving factor, but I think there are many other elements at play, which I look at in the video. Certainly, it seems that everything old eventually becomes new again. There was a vinyl revival, then a cassette revival, and a film photography revival. It only seems natural that VHS would eventually return. I find too that there has been a general interest in physical media over the past few years. I think sometimes people really do get tired of streaming, and not being able to hold things in their hands. If you look on YouTube, you will find many videos that touch upon this. Many of them are from local news broadcasts. Again, these stores that rent VHS seem to be popping up all over the place, from the west coast to the east coast. What do you think of this VHS rental revival? Do you find it exciting and amusing? Or do you think it is a regression and a waste of time? Do you think the VHS tape should have died a permanent death ages ago? Do you collect VHS tapes? Do you still have a VCR? Feel free to leave a comment!
