Newbury Pride Events 11th July 2026.

It is with genuine regret that, after a lifetime of supporting the LGBTQIA+ Community, I have lost respect for Newbury Pride. Newbury Pride are trying to prevent me from video recording and reporting their event in Newbury, invoking the Harassment Act 1997, if I attempt to report. They are also recommending some of their representatives wear badges indicating they do not want to be video recorded or photographed. I believe this is contrary to the spirit of Pride, which values tolerance and inclusivity. If anyone feels threatened in a public place because of their situation (that includes parents, guardians and carers of children at risk) - do not enter a public space and make everyone feel guilty for going about their business. Clearly there is a problem with a society which cannot accept everyone for what they are. In which case, sort out your society and not shoot the messenger. This is unacceptable in a free society, where everyone has the right to photograph/video anything or anyone in a public place, without asking anybody’s permission. This is especially true in a world where most people carry smartphone cameras, intending to record public events to share and enjoy. I note concerns have been expressed that some LGBTQ+ people might be intimidated if there image at yesterday’s (Saturday 11th July) Newbury Pride Event, is published: - “I think it was a nice idea. Imagine a young person growing up in a phobic family, they might desperately want to attend, and to feel part of something but they are scared about the reaction they may get when family members see their face plastered on social media. I know you’ll say that they just shouldn’t leave the house, but imagine the impact that has on the young person, being isolated from a sense of belonging. However, I actually didn’t see anyone wearing the lanyards. All of that didn’t actually stop you showing up and filming though, did it?” I have a video of everyone in the parade. I did not see one person wearing a 'DO NOT PHOTOGRAPH ME' badge. I note Phil Cannings from the NWN was there taking photographs as usual, some of which will be published this week. How about expressing your concern to Phil and the NWN, as well?
