These unique formations, a true display of the beauty of nature's artwork, are a shining jewel of Gyeongju's ocean. ▶ Living Treasures of Gyeongju - Yangdong Village & Donggyeongi, the Dog Gyeongju Yangdong Village, along with Andong Hahoe Village, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It's a rare case for a village with current residents to be designated a World Heritage Site. Nestled just below Seongjusan Mountain, Yangdong Village has produced countless literary figures over the past 550 years. Even within Gyeongju, the former capital of Silla, it offers a unique remnant of Joseon Dynasty culture. This village is home to a dog as special as the UNESCO village itself: the Donggyeongi, a Natural Monument that is said to have guarded the Silla royal family for generations. Designated Natural Monument No. 540, Donggyeongi is a unique dog with a short or absent tail, a characteristic that is documented in ancient documents. We meet the poet who sang about Gyeongju, along with the scenery he enjoyed, through the eyes of one of his students. ▶ Gyeongju Delicacies Made with Sweat and Effort - Gampo Port Flounder & Gyeongju Sannae Gondalbi Located 27 kilometers from downtown Gyeongju, about an hour and a half by car, Gampo Port is a small but central fishing port in the southern East Sea, bustling with fishing boats. Gampo Port, renowned for its flounder, is said to account for 70% of the flounder caught in the East Sea. Gampo Port is always bustling with activity. We explore the vibrant lives of those who make a living from flounder, and meet the people who have made a living from the sea, embracing the East Sea. Just as the Gampo flounder resides in the Gyeongju sea, the mountains of Gyeongju offer the Sannae gondalbi. Gondalbi, a plant similar to the common sagebrush, thrives only in humid, deep mountainous areas, making it a delicacy. In Gyeongju, gondalbi is harvested in the spring, dried, and enjoyed as bibimbap in the fall.
