They buy some cakes and milk for the trip home. They see them leaving the store at 10 p.m., heading home. They will never arrive. Four days later, their Mercury Montego is found abandoned on a mountain road, 120 kilometers in the wrong direction, the engine in perfect condition, the keys missing, one window rolled down. Inside: game programs, the remains of snacks, a carefully folded map. No signs of a struggle. No explanation. The Yuba County Five—Jack Madruga, Ted Weiher, Jackie Huett, Bill Sterling, and Gary Mathias—left behind five basketball tracksuits spread out on beds, ready for the next day's Special Olympics tournament. Three months after their disappearance, as the snow melts in the California Ural Mountains, four bodies are found twenty miles from the car. The fifth—Gary Mathias—is never found. Inside a Forest Service shelter, there is enough food for a year, matches, and pre-packed firewood. The fire has never been lit. In 2020, an internal memo from the Yuba County Sheriff's Office classified for forty years states that Gary Mathias is "believed to be the victim of a criminal act." His family is not told anything. Our independent research and storytelling work is entirely supported by our sponsor, the Strato Bar in San Vito dei Normanni, in the province of Brindisi. The Strato is a place that exudes the flavor of true stories: soft lighting, a cozy atmosphere, and homey cuisine. This is where I often stop to gather ideas and write new episodes. If you're in the area, stop by: it could also become your refuge between stories. Instagram -   / strato_bar   Facebook -   / stratobar1   Time Crime is also a podcast.
