We're accustomed to seeing dragonflies near ponds, water striders on the surface, caddis flies in fast-flowing streams, and mosquitoes over lakes. But how were insects able to transition from a terrestrial environment to freshwater? Why was this transition so successful, while the marine environment remained virtually inaccessible to them? In this lecture, a biologist discusses one of the most astonishing chapters in insect evolution. You'll learn which groups independently colonized freshwater bodies, how they learned to swim, cling to rocks in turbulent currents, extract oxygen underwater, and hunt in completely different conditions.
