Как насекомые пресные воды осваивали | Илья Удалов
🌊 Why did insects conquer freshwater but have little success in the sea? We're accustomed to seeing dragonflies near ponds, water striders on the surface, caddis flies in fast-flowing streams, and mosquitoes over lakes. But how were insects able to transition from a terrestrial environment to freshwater? Why was this transition so successful, while the marine environment remained virtually inaccessible to them? In this lecture, a biologist discusses one of the most astonishing chapters in insect evolution. You'll learn which groups independently colonized freshwater bodies, how they learned to swim, cling to rocks in turbulent currents, extract oxygen underwater, and hunt in completely different conditions. In the video, you'll learn: 🦗 Why insects' closest relatives are marine crustaceans, while marine insects are almost nonexistent. 💧 What ecological niches exist in freshwater: the surface, the water column, the bottom, fast-flowing rivers, swampy puddles, and even freshwater sponges. 🪰 How do the larvae of dragonflies, mayflies, caddis flies, diving beetles, water bugs, mosquitoes, midges, and many other insects live? 🫧 What incredible breathing methods have aquatic insects developed: ⚙️ Why engineers are studying diving beetles and water striders, creating robots based on their model. 🔬 What discoveries were made very recently, and what evolutionary mysteries have only been solved in recent years. This is a story not only about insects, but also about how inventive evolution can be. Some species have learned to run on the surface of the water, others to swim by jet propulsion, and still others to live in the water, never rising for air. Each such adaptation is a remarkable story in its own right.
