The relocation of vendors, who had been scattered and selling on the roadside, to a more suitable area has now been successfully implemented in stages. This success marks a new milestone for Malang City's largest market. The relocation plan had stalled under the previous mayor due to persistent land availability issues. Qodir, the coordinator of the Gadang Market development, revealed that the key to the success of this restructuring was the agreement between the vendors and the Malang City Government. They agreed to lease land provided by the City Government, which was then used as a new trading location. "We've been in communication with the previous mayor for a while, but we haven't had the land yet. Thank God, now the Mayor, Wahyu, has leased the land, and now we're finally ready to move," said Qodir, Friday (May 15, 2026). Interestingly, the construction of the stalls at the relocation site is being done entirely by the vendors themselves. This bold move was taken because the vendors were fed up with selling on the roadside, which has caused severe traffic jams and discomfort when interacting with customers. "This plan hasn't been implemented for over 30 years. Thank God, now there's a solution: renting land, and the vendors have all agreed to build it themselves," Qodir explained to SURYAMALANG.COM. This restructuring process is being carried out in stages to ensure the vendors' economic cycle continues. Previously, vendors were offered the option to move to the terminal area. However, the offer was rejected because the vendors insisted on remaining in the same area. The relocation of the vendors is also being carried out in stages, with the rear plot of land being developed first as an initial shelter. Once the rear area was ready, vendors who had previously spilled onto the main road began to move in. The previously empty front area is now being demolished and reorganized for the construction of the west side. Although some loyal customers were initially confused about finding their regular stalls, market conditions are now said to be much more conducive. Traffic flow in front of Pasar Gadang, which used to be a major congestion point and a frequent source of complaints from road users, has gradually returned to normal. Sabar, the Market Gadang relocation field implementer, echoed this sentiment, stating that a self-help approach and simplified administration for vendors are believed to be key factors behind the smooth management of Pasar Gadang.
